One of the many joys of this project was that this was a former client who knew how we worked, trusted us implicitly with our vision for their property. We layered in natural woods, light stained oaks and nice marbles to celebrate the tranquility and calming feel we wanted to emulate with the new character of the property. Instead of introducing classical features, which would’ve made the ceiling feel even lower, we took our time carefully developing a contemporary concept packed with light, neutral tones, lots of green to bring in a taste of the outside and fully embrace our love of biophilic design.
TOWN HOUSE LAYOUT HOW TO
By doing that, we had to carefully spend time thinking about what exactly the new character would be - a designer’s dream scenario! We were left with a building envelope with limited ceiling heights and needed to decide how to make the most of that. We added new staircase position, a ground floor extension, a new rear façade, new glazing at the front and back and by doing so, it allowed us to create an entirely new identity for the property. We worked hand in hand with an architect to keep the façade of the property and some of the joisted floors but start afresh with the rest of it. More importantly, the layout of the original design didn’t work for the client at all. The house had very few architectural features with little to no elements that we wanted to retain within the design. We brought a full turnkey design service to this project - interior architecture, interior design - all the furnishings and artwork and project management along the way.
We got the opportunity to reinvent the wheel and bring that idea to life. Its neighbouring properties were all the same - all built by the same developer and leave you questioning what they could’ve been if they had been approached differently. When we took on the project, it was a house that had been untouched for 30-40 years. This property was something quite special.
